The Power of Promotoras: What It Means to Advocate as a Promotora
Promotoras have el corazón de servicio y el poder de la abogacía (the heart of service and the power of advocacy)! The promotor model is rooted in transforming families and communities, and they are experts in the community’s way of life, needs, communication, and resources. In this session, through experiential learning, dinamicas, music, testimonios, and more, we will highlight the promotor model as a foundation for effective advocacy. Together we will highlight and skill build on promotoras’ innate advocacy abilities. We will focus on advocacy skill building from natural abilities to formal tools for advocacy and organizing including foundational strategies and examples of advocacy in education and training, local organizing to campaign planning!
Objetives
- Understand the foundation of the promotor model and its role in advocacy.
- Identify two advocacy issue areas that they have had an impact in.
- Identify one advocacy tool that they look forward to practicing in the next six months.
